As a high-school student trying to rack up volunteer hours, I was constantly on the lookout for opportunities. So, when I heard about the chance to work at the Northern Lights Festival Boreal, I jumped at it. Little did I know that it would turn into an unforgettable adventure that involved cooking for the bands and almost killing Blue Rodeo with my culinary skills - or lack thereof!

After weeks of anticipation, I was thrilled when I got accepted for the gig. I was even allowed to bring two friends along with me. But as I was meeting with one of the coordinators closer to the start date, things started to get weird. She asked me about recipes and food-related questions, and it dawned on me that she thought I was a professional chef! I couldn't help but laugh at the absurdity of the situation. I had no professional cooking experience whatsoever, but I was determined to make the most of it.

The day of the event arrived, and we were all excited and admittedly a bit high with anticipation. We arrived at Laurentian University, where the festival was being held, and eventually found our way into the kitchen assigned to us. None of us had been to this part of the campus before, and we were in for a surprise. We were not only going to cook, but we were cooking for the bands performing at the festival! Talk about pressure.

To add to the challenge, we were getting paid a meager $150, which we had to split among the three of us. But hey, we were up for the challenge. I rolled up my sleeves and started pulling off culinary miracles left and right. Boiling spaghetti noodles in ridiculously deep pots, cracking open cans of basic spaghetti sauce, and getting some rice going with soy sauce on standby - I was in full "Iron Chef" mode. Or so I thought.

As the night went on, it became clear that my cooking skills were not up to par. The deep pot I was using to boil spaghetti noodles was so difficult to stir with just a soup spoon that it ended up burning to the bottom. The rice turned into a gluey mess, and no amount of canned mushrooms and soy sauce could salvage it. But with no other choice, I served the food to the hungry bands, hoping for the best.

As midnight approached, we finally finished cleaning up and sneaked out back for a smoke. To our surprise, one of the bands we had cooked for was there too. They mentioned that the only edible thing we had served them was the rice! 🍚😂

In the end, we used the $150 we earned to buy an ounce of something special, which we split three ways. It was a hilarious and unforgettable experience, and while my cooking skills were put to the test and fell short, I learned valuable lessons about improvisation, handling pressure, and making the best out of unexpected situations.

So, that's the story of how I almost killed Blue Rodeo with my cooking - or at least tried to. It's a tale that still makes me laugh to this day, and a reminder that sometimes the most memorable adventures come from the most unexpected and hilarious situations.

Bon Appétit, indeed! And hey, Blue Rodeo, if you're reading this, I promise I've improved my cooking skills since then! Maybe we can have a redo someday. Cheers! 🤣👋🏻
